Glassware artist designs new mace for Eastleigh mayor

 May 20, 2015

Our glassware artist Carly Mann has joined forces with a multinational corporation to design and make a new commemorative mace for the Mayor of Eastleigh.

Carly Mann, who works from her studio at The Sorting Office, worked alongside a team of engineers from Prysmian Group, the world leader in the energy and telecom cables and systems industry, on the creation of the new contemporary mace.

She was commissioned by Eastleigh Borough Council to come up with a new design after it was decided that a lighter, more modern-looking mace would be easier to use on civic duties such as the mayor’s busy programme of school visits.

Seventy-years after it made and donated the Borough’s original ceremonial mace Prysmian Group, which at the time was still called Pirelli General Cable Works,  stepped in again and joined the exciting design project.

For the past for six months Carly and the Prysmian Group engineers have worked together on creating this new piece of Eastleigh Borough history.

Made from brass and with a pyramid style head, the new mace weighs 6.6kg and features three 22K gold gilt-covered glass panels etched with Eastleigh Borough’s two Coat of Arms, and a new crest Carly has designed for Prysmian.

Speaking about the project, Carly said: “It was a first for me working on such a big scale collaborative art project. As Prysmian Group is such a large company it was initially quite overwhelming but soon became very enjoyable to work with such an enthusiastic team.

“We did encounter a few problems along the way, certain design features, particularly with the mace head, had to be adjusted many times. It was a valuable learning process just how long it took turning a few sketches into a beautiful physical object.”

She added: “Revisiting the photographs of the previous maces has really put into perspective the importance of what I have been involved in creating. I feel privileged to be part of Eastleigh’s proud history.”

The new commemorative mace was presented at the annual Mayor-making ceremony on Thursday, May 14, which saw Cllr Jane Welsh elected to the position of Mayor of the Borough of Eastleigh.
