Spinner rings are delightful pieces of jewellery to make and to wear. The edges of the base ring are flared to capture the narrower satellite ring (or rings if you prefer!) that spin freely. The rings can be textured with a variety of hammers and decorative punches, the edges of the main ring filed into waves or left straight and the silver can be given an antiqued finish or left bright and polished - so many variations that everyone in the class can make their own unique piece of jewellery.
The Spinner Ring workshop teaches you all the traditional silversmithing techniques you need to create your own stunning and perfectly fitting sterling silver ring. This workshop is suitable for beginners to jewellery making as it teaches many of the basic skills needed for more advanced skills, however those with previous experience will also find their skills tested and improved by the end of the session. We will also discuss tools, equipment, materials and health and safety considerations.
Only 8 places are available to ensure that everyone gets the help and attention they need. Under 16 year olds are welcome but will need to be accompanied by a paying adult.
Tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes are included in the workshop fee, however lunch is not provided.
Materials (sterling silver sheet) are available for purchase on the day. The exact cost of the materials will be determined by the size and therefore weight of the ring you make and the price of silver on the day, however material costs for most rings is approximately £9.
Tools and Equipment
The workshop fee includes use of all the tools and equipment needed. It also includes a printed copy of my Spinner Rings ebook (normally £12) to take home with you and a copy will also be emailed to you after the workshop.
Cancellations of workshop places and private tuition bookings within two weeks of the event will forfeit the workshop/private tuition fee unless I am able to find someone to take your place. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are unable to attend.
Sawing sheet metal is one of the fundamental skills in silversmithing and jewellery making, a skill that once mastered can be used to create beautiful work with the minimum of equipment - a jeweller's saw, a bench peg and your hands. However it is also one of the skills that can also cause the most frustration with broken blades, uneven cuts and lots of filing and cleaning up afterwards!
By the end of this two day course you will be confidently sawing smooth curves and sharp distinct shapes, and filling those shapes with delicate pierced designs. Starting with a series of exercises in copper sheet, I will teach you all the tips and tricks that I use in my own work and have taught to my college students over the last seven years so that your sawing becomes smooth, confident and fluid. You will then use these skills to create your own beautiful designs in silver.
