CCC: Denise Hughes’ Alium Vase
Illustrator Denise Hughes chose Jane Austen’s cottage garden as her inspiration for an illustrated vase. Denise began gathering ideas for the project by visiting the garden, taking photos and talking to the cottage’s head gardener, Celia Smith,
After visiting the garden, and being drawn to its vibrant flowers, Denise made stacks of drawings, eventually settling on an Alium design that also featured the quintessential cottage house and oak tree.
Having chosen a design she was happy with, Denise then transferred her process to the computer, using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to scale the design, tidy it up and add the spring hues.
Once the design was finished, Denise visited ceramics expert Sheena Bond in at 318 Ceramics in Farnham, where prototype vases were fired, and Denise’s decal was added
